Dale Duvernay

Dale Katherine Duvernay

Before Hurricane Katrina hit, 50-year-old Dale Katherine Duvernay was a caregiver and performed, as a storyteller and poet. When the winds from the hurricane started, Dale was sitting in a cafeteria at a local Catholic school. When flood waters breached New Orleans’ levy system, her Uptown New Orleans neighborhood was flooded. Dale, her husband, Raymond, went to a nearby middle school that had been set up as a shelter. After arriving at Camp Dawson, Dale performed at the wedding of her close friends, Greg and Glenda Avery. She now lives in Charleston, W.Va. with her husband, her 20-year-old son, Nahum, and her 8-year-old granddaughter, Sierra.
