Patrick Burke
Hurricane Katrina evacuee Patrick Burke, 83, made friends quickly at Camp Dawson, the Preston County, West Virginia military base that housed about 300 people fleeing the storm. People there called him “Pops.” Legally blind and more than a bit feisty, Burke refused to go to a nursing home. Instead, he returned to his flooded home in Metairie, just outside New Orleans, so he could be buried next to his wife of 61 years. He splits his time between a FEMA trailer in his front yard and his gutted, moldy home.
