Greg Avery
The day after Hurricane Katrina hit, 53-year-old Greg Avery set up a shelter at a school in his Uptown New Orleans neighborhood with his best friend, Allen “Sarge” Smith. Over 100 people visited their makeshift shelter the first day, and many stayed the entire eight days until the military came to evacuate them. Greg and his life partner, Glenda Shelby Perkins, ended up at Camp Dawson. On Sept. 24, they were married by a local pastor and are now starting over in Morgantown, W.Va.
